Relax With a Home Aquarium : It's well known that pets make people healthier and happier by helping them relax. Watching fish swim in a home aquarium, for example, encourages a state of deep relaxation, almost to the point of hypnosis. In fact, there are commercial videotapes and DVDs that are simply movies of home aquariums. These tapes sell well as relaxation aids.
Soothing Sounds: Home aquariums offer relaxing sounds as well as sights. The sound of running water is music to many people's ears, as sales of decorative home fountains can attest. Some sound-conditioning (or "white noise") machines include water noises like rain or ocean waves among their comforting sounds. Aquarium technlogy has advanced rapidly, and modern air pumps and filters are much quieter than they were a few decades ago. Pumps also can be shifted around to find the spot where they are quietest.
Some people actually find the droning of an air pump relaxing after they become accustomed to it. Loyalty A fish might not be your first choice for a roommate, but consider this: They don't talk back, they don't give you a hard time (except when they are hungry), and they won't gossip about your family when your back is turned. And, though your friends may not believe you, they certainly do seem to recognize their owners, and even act like they're glad to see you. Sometimes they behave differently for their owners than for other people, too, performing "tricks" like darting around or "kissing" the surface of the water. Confidence Booster Maintaining a home aquarium full of happy, healthy fish requires preparation, patience, and technical know-how, as well as time.
Fish need to be monitored every day to make sure they are healthy. Not everyone cares enough to develop these skills. But for many, the jewel-bright fish swimming in an aquarium are works of art that reflect their skill and dedication. Knowing that you made it happen can add to your self-confidence and enhance other areas of your life.
